This is something I'd like to know about neuropsychology. Clearly, increased control over one's sleeping habits would lead to increased survivability, right? As a complete layman in the field, it seems to me that going from having nearly completely subconsciously controlled sleep habits to having slight influence over one's sleep cycle to having pretty good control would be a natural evolutionary progression. I mean, sleep is subconsciously controlled pretty much by definition, but choosing to enter the sleep state at least should not be such a pain in the posterior.
